Social Dimensions of Flow

Context

The scientific exploration of the collective aspects of flow, although conceptually very nascent at the international level, is currently of great interest in Europe (Gaggioli, Milani, Mazzoni & Riva, 2011; Heutte, 2017, 2019 ; Magyaródi & Oláh, 2015, 2017; Pels, Kleinert,& Mennigen, 2018; Salanova, Rodriguez-Sanchez, Schaufeli & Cifre, 2014; Van den Hout, 2016, 2017, 2018) and has become one of the specific objects that a working group of members from the European Flow Researchers Network (EFRN) want to take over.

Strategy to investigate the Social Dimensions of Flow

During its 7th annual meeting (Paris, France, November 2018), the EFRN entrusted Jean Heutte (CIREL lab., Université de Lille, France) with the scientific coordination of a working group on the social dimensions of the autotelic experience (flow).

The working group mandated by the EFRN and coordinated by Jean Heutte is initially composed of :

  • Dmitry Leontiev, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia)
  • Jef van den Hout, Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands)
  • Tímea Magyaródi, Faculty of Education and Psychology, Budapest (Hungary)
  • Milija Šimleša, LATI, Université Paris Descartes (France)

At the end of the 8th annual meeting of the EFRN (Aarhus, Denmark, November 2019), this working group is now in charge of organizing a consensus conference on the perspectives (conceptual and methodological) for the scientific study of the social dimensions of autotelic experience: all resources and preparatory work will be hosted on the IT infrastructures and services of the Université de Lille.

Future work

Following Antonella Delle Fave's call, this initiative is in line with European perspectives wishing to gradually emancipate themselves from the influence of the culture of the founders (North Americans) of the 4th wave of scientific psychology. In addition to the organisation of a consensus conference that could take place during the next annual meeting of the EFRN (Milan, Italy, November 2020 ?), the work will continue, notably through the organisation of symposia for the 7th World Congress on Positive Psychology (IPPA 2021 in Vancouver), which should be one of the important steps in the creation of an international research network on the social dimension of the autotelic experience.
